Vegetables in the fog.
In spite of one of the foggiest Springs ever, my garden is doing well. Tomatoes are the main victims of this weather. I planted them so early that by this time I should have a huge number of red ones. So far, none. But the 38 plants look healthy and are laden with green tomatoes.
This is what it looked like on April 26:
Plenty to share by June.(Or so I thought in April.)
I harvested onions two days ago. They are delicious; I used one in the two meatloaves I made last night.
Note ping pong ball for size comparison.
Some of you may remember the pole bean construction I made a while ago. I planted three beans around each pole. This bed is lined so it's gopher-proof.
I was determined to observe how the beans would climb the poles and how they would master passing over the 2 x 4 structure. I even thought of helping them but they have a (plant) mind of their own. Looking from the top they always curl around widdershins (look it up). I imagine they go the other way south of the equator.
Round, round, go around, we get around.
Peas, of course, love this kind of weather. Mrs. side pocket plants sugar peas Spring and Fall and protects them from the birds. Here they are bursting out of the enclosure, but still under the watchful eye of our guard owl.
Many are ready for tonight's dinner.
Flowers, too. These are Chrysanthemums and marigolds are planted around and amongst.
I would love to stay here for the rest of my life but we have to be realistic; we are getting old. And our friends are old. We both are fantastically fortunate in our physical condition but so many friends are not. All too many haven't been able to visit because they couldn't manage the few steps to the house. Yesterday my son and I installed a handrail (actually two) to help them, and us for that matter.
Get a grip. You'll need it.
Here's hoping for sunny days, and vegetables on your kitchen table.
