Often times the T in LGBT often gets ignored. I often feel that I am a bad ally because I don't understand this community too well. Also, until very recently, people weren't discussing it. So my embarrassment about not understanding, combined with an inability to learn about the subject, has also left me kind of awkward around some wonderful people I know.
It doesn't mean that I don't want to be a better advocate. and now I have a way to do so.
Scott Skinner-Thompson is a lawyer, an NYU professor, and a columnist. (Also, that is one of the beautiful wedding pictures I found online. He had alpacas at his wedding. I'm jealous.)Anthony Kennedy's decision for the majority is one of those decisions that have repercussions that we don't know about yet.
The one I didn't realize, but it makes perfect sense when it is pointed out is how it does affect our transgender friends.
This week is even better because Anthony Kennedy opened the door to transgender people, and now we could see a case that can open doors for another group that is oppressed.
Like John F. Kennedy said, "The rights of every man are diminished when the right's of one man are threatened."
We are a better people now that we have marriage equality. Next, we will fix the rights of the transgender community.
