Let's show Keith Hahn, Chairman of the Edison Democrats, that this is not acceptable.
Edison is one of the largest and most diverse towns in the state of New Jersey. It has the largest Indian-American population, percentage-wise, in the country, and also has large populations of whites, blacks, Hispanics and East Asians. It is also home to tumultuous politics: long a Democratic stronghold, the party here is full of warring factions, and it's not uncommon to see multiple factions run their own Independent candidacies for Mayor and Council.
For the longest time, however, the party was held together by the chairmanship of former St. Senator "Doc" Paterniti, an old school Democratic pol who was nonetheless able to make inroads with the town's burgeoning ethnic communities.
Paterniti retired from the Chairmanship after 31 years in June, with his protege, Anthony Russomanno, expected to succeed him in a three-way municipal committee fight with police officer Keith Hahn and Councilman Bob Diehl. Paterniti had defeated Hahn 75-55 in the last election, and it was expected that Diehl would split the anti-Russomanno vote. Mayor Tom Lankey also supported Russomano.
However, in a move that you should really read about here, Diehl dropped out of the race and threw his support to Hahn, who edged Russomano 66-64.
Now, for those not from New Jersey, it must be emphasized how corrupt and incompetent the Edison Police Department is. Just do a Google News search for "Edison Police Department" to find three damaging stories just in the past month, a huge amount for a town of 100,000 people. Having someone from that heap in charge of the Democratic Party was scary enough.
But to now see the Democratic Chairman of the 5th largest town in the state posing with Donald Trump and declaring, "I’m a cop first, Democratic Chairman second... Mr. Trump was gracious, respectful and more importantly appreciative of the impromptu security detail provided by the Edison Police. The Barclay’s was a great event, Edison Police, Fire and EMS did a great job and we were happy to see Mr. Trump." is utterly disgusting.
I'll be calling the State Committee and Middlesex County Organization today to ask for a censure of Chairman Hahn, and ask that you do as well. The number is (609) 392-3367 for the state and (732) 906-3680 for the county. Don't let this sort of stuff happen in our party; no matter where you're from, make it known that we're watching closely to hold behavior like this accountable.
