The Planned Parenthood controversy is not over. Now, it is Republican congressmen that are leading the fight.
The determination of the House Republicans to block federal funding from Planned Parenthood is admirable. Some congressmen are willing to go to extreme lengths in the name of partisan politics. A few are willing to shut down the federal government to ensure that their version of morality is imposed on women across America.
Time is running out both parties in Washington. Congress has only five days left before they must approve a new plan of funding for the entire government. But some Republicans refuse to vote for a new plan that would send any funding to Planned Parenthood.
The fight is extension of the attack launched on the health group by the Center for Medical Progress this summer. The pro-life group launched a series of videos that claimed that defamed Planned Parenthood. The videos claim that group was selling the tissue of aborted fetuses for profit.
Planned Parenthood has deemed the videos to be fictional at best. The Obama administration and many house Democrats have also stood beside the group. However, the videos have re-sparked the long standing debate about the abortion services provided by the organization with discount codes.
Some Republicans are so intent on perpetuating the outright lies that they are happy to facilitate the decimation of women’s health in America as collateral damage. But the accusations against Planned Parenthood have less to do with legal and moral issues and more to do with political gain.
Carly Fiorina insisted that one of the videos showed a fully formed fetus lying on a table as a voice insisted that it must be kept alive to harvest its organs. Critics have described this statement as fiction. Politifact also says that it is “mostly false.”
Her statement is false but everyone is talking about her.
The fact that these Republican cowboys are willing to shut down the government over an issue of morality is economically wrong. That they are willing to shut down the government over a moral issue that is perpetuated by extreme lies and misrepresentations is not just grossly irresponsible, It is completely unjustifiable.
Once again, the Republicans at the heart of this debate are using lies to stir up the emotions of the American public. These politicians are not focused on finding a solution to help women avoid more unplanned pregnancies. They would rather the spotlight be on themselves to further their own political careers.
To be frank, the threats of a government shutdown have little to nothing to do with saving the lives of women or their unborn children. The people involved are as interested in the lives of those who rely on Planned Parenthood as they are in the facts. This threat is about politics and nothing more.
These tactics will not end abortion. Instead, they will do more than harm women reliant on Planned Parenthood. They will harm both their party and themselves.
