A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Do you know of dumb or outdated laws where you live?
For some reason I was thinking about local laws probably since its January and lots of new laws take effect each January. That got me to thinking about some dumb laws I knew about in Denver when I lived there. For instance, it was illegal to wear high-heeled shoes in Denver. I know this was the law when I lived there. So I Googled it and couldn't find it any longer. I did discover it is illegal to wear high-heeled shoes in Carmel, CA unless you have a permit, which is still on the books.
Some of these laws actually had real reasons. For instance there are laws in both Nevada and Arizona regarding camels. At first this looks just silly, but these laws are on the books from when the military was using/training camels for use back in the day when they used them in north Africa during WWII.
Several states have laws limiting the number of women that can live together. These laws were enacted to close down brothels. Some folks notice these laws are still on the books then jump to wrong conclusions such as sororities must then be illegal in these states because of that law. This isn't true.
However there are some laws which just make me scratch my head. For instance, it is illegal to shoot whales from moving vehicles in Tennessee. Why? That is an actual law but it must have been stuck onto some other bigger law as purely a joke. I suspect it would have been to make fun of folks that care about the environment.
Using professor Google I was able to find some dumb laws state by state and I thought I'd share some of them with you. I simply cut and paste these funny and dumb laws from a few different sources. You can spend hours getting lost looking up outdated or weird laws. It becomes dizzying. Well here are some I selected just for shits and giggles:
Alabama: 1) Anyone who wears a false mustache in church and causes "unseemly laughter" is subject to immediate arrest. 2) Putting salt on a railroad track may be punishable by death. 3) State code allows only 5 minutes to vote. 4) Dominoes may not be played on Sunday.
Alaska: 1) In Alaska moose may not be viewed from an airplane. 2) In Alaska it's also illegal to feed alcoholic beverages to a moose. 3) It is illegal to get drunk in a bar and then remain on the premises. 4) No one may tie their pet dog to the roof of a car (Mitt Romney?).
Arizona: 1) In Tucson it's illegal for a woman to wear pants. 2) Every man in Phoenix must wear pants when he comes to town. 3) In Nogales, it's illegal to wearsuspenders. 4) It is illegal to feed garbage to pigs without a permit. 5) It is illegal to manufacture imitation cocaine.
Arkansas: 1) It is legal in Arkansas if a husband beats his wife, but only once a month. 2) It is illegal to mispronounce the name of the state of Arkansas in Arkansas. 3) Oral sex is considered to be sodomy. 4) School teachers who bob their hair will not get a raise.
California: 1) In Chico California there's a $500 fine for detonating nuclear weapons within city limits (good luck enforcing that one). 2) It is prohibited to shoot an animal from an automobile, except a whale. 3) A frog that dies during a frog-jumping contest can't be eaten.
Colorado: 1) It's illegal for anyone to wear a mask in Denver. 2) In Denver the dog catcher must warn dogs before impounding them by posting a notice on a tree in the city parks for three consecutive days. 3) State law prohibits the use of rain barrels or any methods to catch rain water.
Connecticut: 1) In order for a pickle to legally be a pickle, it must bounce. 2) It is illegal for unmarried couples to commit lewd acts and live together. 3) It is illegal to let people cheat off of you (such as in school). 4) It's illegal to sell or barter fur from dogs or cats.
Delaware: 1) It's illegal to try to pawn your wooden leg. 2) Six-year-old girls may not run around without being fully clothed. 3) Alcohol may not be served in nightclubs if dancing is occurring on the premises at the same time.
These are just a few from the first states in alphabetical order. I went to a number of places that have these but site is the best one. It opens to Alabama first of course.
