So, last night I was bored. Was flipping the channels when i came across an ABC 20/20 segment. The story follows Paul Ghysels, a Vietnam era Navy vet. At retirement he decides to move into the ancestral home (no mortgage) built in 1902 in Berkeley California. Today that area is full of "greek" houses. Follow to see the "rest of the story".
Over the last year it's become an intolerable place to live. Here is just a snippet of video from the story. ABC strings along other stories after.. In addition to the footage, he's had break-ins, loud music at all hours, shots fired at his house, vandalism on a grand scale, and multiple death threats.
According to Jim when he first moved in (probably mid to late 70s), things were much more civilized. He and his wife were invited to dinners for example. I was in college during the 70s and early 80s and certainly don't recall any of the Greeks being this wild.
According to Jim, the University and the Police have just thrown their hands up, and effectively do nothing.
My question is where is the National Guard, the MRAPS, the tear gas, the riot police, and the arrests? That's how the situation in Ferguson MO (which wasn't nearly as bad) was handled.
Finally, I'm asking everyone I know to read Matt Taibbi's "The Divide", which contains many first person accounts of where our two-tier justice system is and how it just grinds on the poor and the "less desirable"
