Monday! So I started the potato diet. WTH. I like potatoes, and it's supposed to be good for you. Plus, my Halloween costume is both small and rather slutty. Maybe. If I go to the party with one good friend, I may have to reconsider. Don't think that he likes slutty. Oh well. On to the diet!
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group gives Kossacks a safe place to check in, a daily diary where we can let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, earthquakes, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It also allows us to find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, earthquakes etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a Kosmail and ask to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!
We do have a diary schedule. But, when you are ready to write that diary, either post in thread or send FloridaSNMOM a Kosmail with the date. If you need someone to fill in, ditto. FloridaSNMOM is here on and off through the day usually from around 9:30 or 10 am eastern to around 11 pm eastern.

So I stumbled across this one day...some guy named Christopher Voigt was protesting the exclusion of potatoes in school lunches. He ate nothing but potatoes for two months. He lost 21 pounds and his cholesterol dropped 67 points. Holy cow. Back in my youth, I survived for two weeks on a 10-lb bag of potatoes and a package of hot dogs, but that's because I was broke due to an impulsive purchase. However, my health was fine. So "The Potato Diet" has been getting press for a while.
The Potato Diet
A few years back, I was trying to lose a couple of stubborn pounds that wouldn’t budge. Those dreaded ‘last 10’ were getting the best of me. I tried low-carb, no-carb, low-calorie, no-calorie, high fat, low fat, high protein—everything, or so I thought. Then I stumbled one day upon some folks who were eating nothing but potatoes and losing weight at a phenomenal pace. Not being one to follow the crowd, I spent the next year digging deep into the idea of an all-potato weight loss diet, and this is what I came up with…
These rules are simple, but they were not easy to develop. This is the result of hundreds of people trying dozens of versions of an all-potato diet and reporting their successes and failures:
THE POTATO DIET
1. Plan on eating just white potatoes for 3 to 7 days
2. Eat between 2 and 4 pounds of clean, peeled, cooked potatoes daily
3. No other foods allowed
4. No spices, salt, pepper, butter, sour cream, cheese, bacon bits or vinegar allowed
5. Exercising is discouraged, lifting light things/walking OK
6. All normal vitamins and minerals OK to continue, but not needed
7. Skipping breakfast encouraged, eat twice a day, minimal snacking
8. If you need to lose more weight, alternate the Potato Diet with healthy eating
9. Not recommended for people who eat every 2-3 hours, have glucose issues, or eating disorders
10. Highly recommended for people who have their hunger under control, have been dieting for 6 months or more, and are having trouble losing weight with the normal approaches

You really should read the WHOLE article. There is quite a bit of scientific blathering down at the end. I told a friend about it. He was just diagnosed with high blood pressure. Potassium, apparently, can help bring down high blood pressure. Potatoes are loaded with potassium. This diet can also help with cholesterol and high triglycerides.
There are a couple of different variations, including this one, with yogurt:
Daily plan:
Day 1:
Breakfast: One boiled potato without any salt added and one glass of yogurt
Lunch: Two boiled potatoes without any salt added and one glass of yogurt
Dinner: Two glasses of yogurt
--skip--
An important note you should bear in mind: Do not, by any chance, confuse French fries with the boiled potato, as delicious as they seem to you. The boiled potato considers to be a very healthy food, while the French fries are quite the opposite. They are deep fried and cancerous, and most important for the people who want to lose weight, can cause gaining some extra weight because of the amount of calories they have. The boiled potato contains a lot of vitamins and minerals, and the fibers speed up the digestion.
In 100 grams of potatoes there are only 75 calories, which is less of the amount of calories in a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. The yogurt, on the other hand, regulates the work of the digestive system, removing the extra water and the toxins from the body.

I think that the yogurt makes sense. I bought Fage 2%. Not sure what a "glass" of yogurt is...maybe 6 oz? Less?
You CAN eat potatoes and get slim! Dieters who ate spuds still lost weight - as long as they stuck to a calorie-controlled diet
Study looked at dieters eating low calories and high GI or low GI foods
They also included a control group who had no calorie or GI restrictions
All the groups were told to eat 5 to 7 servings of potato a week
After 12 weeks all the people lost similar amounts of weight
Rather than cause weight gain, potatoes could hep weight loss, say experts
Medium-sized spud has just 110 calories and half daily vitamin C dose

So I bought 30 pounds of potatoes and boiled five pounds. I got Yukon Gold. Hopefully, they qualify as white potatoes. Otherwise, I have messed up. The first article said that they potatoes are most healthful when they have been cooked and cooled, then reheated. But cold potatoes are also good, according to the author.
The diet works in part because of the satiety factor: potatoes make you feel full, but actually contain very few calories. There's also the boredom factor of eating the same thing
for days on end. You tend to eat less.
One is supposed to drink water (what? No wine?) and multivitamins are not necessary but can be taken.
And here is yet another variation, this one allowing slightly more flavoring.
Chris Voigt, the head of the Washington State Potato Commission, lost 21 pounds in two months and dropped his cholesterol by 60 points on a potato only diet. He and his doctor were astonished. He did it to prove to health officials in the state that potatoes were rich in all the right kind of nutrients and should not be banned from school meals
The spud loving Irish may prefer this diet to any other. Here is what needs to be done, as outlined in ehow.com
1. Eat only potatoes, morning, noon and night. Eat them baked, mashed, steamed, roasted, and juiced, but never fried.
A list of spices and seasonings is included. Mr. Voigt did use olive oil with his potatoes.

So what the heck. I'll try it. Happy Monday!
