Governor Sam Brownback announced an executive order today, pointing out that Kansas does not want to harbor terrorists, and as a result, they will not provide any assistance for Syrian refugees.
Brownback’s executive order, readable here, highlights some of the reasons.
WHEREAS, Kansas locations previously have been targeted for terrorist acts of violence, and the perpetrators have been apprehended and prosecuted; and
The governor’s concerns for Kansas residents are notable and his remembering back to prior terrorist events that faced Kansas should remind many of us the dangers we can have in America.
Timothy McVeigh, the Oklahoma City bomber, of course came through Fort Riley and Geary County, Kansas on his way to one of the largest terrorist events on US soil, with his attack on the Oklahoma Federal building. Brownback is also likely referencing the case of a Wichita man who attempted but was foiled in an attack at Wichita Airport in 2013.
The text of the Executive Order, though, makes this clear that at least one governor has better international investigative powers than we had previously been known.
WHEREAS, the terrorist perpetrators of the Paris attack appear to have ties to the Syrian refugee population; and
WHEREAS, I have concluded that the admission of Syrian refugees to the State of Kansas presents an unacceptable risk to the safety and security of the state of Kansas.
Kansas joins a growing Republican group of governors rejecting refugees citing terrorism concerns.
