We've done it, America. It took terrorist attacks in France by French citizens against French targets, and the very next week we're contemplating American internment camps.
Rhode Island state Sen. Elaine Morgan (R) said in an email Tuesday that she opposes resettling Syrian refugees because "[t]he Muslim religion and philosophy is to murder, rape, and decapitate anyone is a non Muslim."
If the U.S. does "take these people in," she added, "we should set up refugee camp to keep them segregated from our populous [sic]."
She has responded to press inquiries by saying she meant to edit the “camps” back out of the email before sending it, which makes it all better and everybody should leave her alone now.
The problem America faces, you see, is that all those war refugees (not that many, mind you, and fewer than other nations such as Canada are resettling because Canadians are apparently not nearly as dedicated to wetting their trousers as we are in the Land of the Free) might get their icky Muslimness on the good, wholesome American racist piece-of-shittism that is, oh say, Mike Moon’s Missouri.
With Gov. Jay Nixon saying he won’t seek to block Syrian refugees from resettling in Missouri, Republican state Rep. Mike Moon is calling for a special legislative session to “tie the governor’s hands” and stop “the potential Islamization of Missouri.”
[...] He says he is specifically concerned about Muslim refugees lying to federal authorities in order to make their way into the country.
“And, from what I’ve seen, a practicing Muslim comes in all flavors (black, white, brown, yellow —American, African, European, etc. etc.),” Moon, a Republican from Ash Grove, says in the letter. “A ‘white’ lie could allow an individual to pass through the vetting process.”
Get it? A "white" lie could let in even a "yellow" Muslim. Thanks for that input, Rep. Moon, you are definitely a valued member of the American political class and not at all cryogenically frozen 1930s racist unthawed and just trying to make his way in this crazy new world of color TV and only half the expected number of drinking fountains.
But what if, despite all our best efforts, war refugees fleeing the barbarism of ISIS actually make it to America? How do we put the carefully vetted families into the internment camps? Why, the National Guard, of course.
"We need to activate the Tennessee National Guard and stop them from coming in to the state by whatever means we can," said House GOP Caucus Chairman Glen Casada, R-Franklin, referencing refugees.
A reminder: The terrorist attacks that spawned this were carried out by French and Belgian citizens, in France. A week later, our politicians and citizens are talking about setting up internment camps for Syrians fleeing Syria. In America. Imprisoning the whole lot of them, men, women, and children, just in case.
