That's right, this hideous chemical has found its way into our kitchens as the anti- microbial in our sponges. It is not enough that we are washing our hands with a chemical that then shows up in our poop, but now we are washing dishes with it as well.
Triclosan is used in sponges so that they will not mold, or get all funky in shipment. It also prevents them from building up bacteria while in use. What we are not told is that trace amounts of triclosan are applied to your dishes each time you wash them with one of these tainted sponges. That's right....it sticks to your dishes and does NOT come off. This means we are consuming this chemical internally, which is what I believe led to the FDA finding triclosan disrupts hormones.
READ THE BACK of your sponge !!! If it says "not safe for aquarium use" then it has triclosan in it. They have to put this warning, because triclosan will kill the fish in your aquarium. But they have no problem with you washing your dishes with it.
Dial soap is one of the worst soaps. Scotch bright is one of the worst sponges.
You can find sponges that DO NOT contain triclosan by reading the label. If it says " Not for aquarium use" ...STAY AWAY.
Trader Joe's offers natural sponges with no chemicals added as do most health food stores. Any sponge that is dried and shrunken when you buy it, is chemical free.
