We have all made it out the other end of another Thanksgiving. Yes, we may have put on a few pounds and had an argument with a crazy uncle, but we can’t let our bloated guard down. The enemy is at the gate. Button up those pants and steel yourself, for the war on Christmas is about to ramp up once again.
I’m not talking about the ridiculous trumped-up claims that ungodly liberals are waging a war on Christmas. That is just claptrap that Fox News spouts in order to drive up ratings and put a few extra bucks in Bill O’Reilly’s pocket. It is just bothersome noise blowing out the pie holes of people who will say and do anything in their hypocritically ideological effort to paint conservatives as holier than thou.
No, I’m talking about the war on Christmas perpetrated by fundamentalist and evangelical Christians who use the birth of Jesus Christ as an opportunity dictate how everyone else is to live their own lives. They have hijacked the message of their Christ, a message that has at its heart peace on earth and goodwill towards men. These mortal men and woman who call themselves Christian have the audacity to claim to know the mind of God right down to who should be put to death in his name.
I’m talking about the corporate assholes who manipulate every last dollar from your bank account through their Black Fridays and now, even Blacker Thanksgiving Thursdays. People who love nothing more than to see people whipped up into such a frenzy of commercialism that they will literally trample each other over an iPhone 6. I’m talking about the big shop stores you enter on a fine autumnal afternoon in October only to hear the Musak version of Jingle Bells blaring over their speakers. I’m talking about K-Mart’s decision to begin airing Christmas commercials the day after Halloween.
These are the people who truly wage a war on Christmas. I have always loved the merriment of this holiday. We had wonderful Christmases growing up. Extended family getting together on Christmas Eve to share a huge meal and our family unit waking up the next morning to open presents and enjoy an atmosphere of contentment. As I grew into adulthood and was encouraged to think for myself, I came to my own belief that Christianity is not the only path a moral human being can take in life. That does not mean that I don’t still admire and try to keep the message of love that Christ the philosopher spoke about. And that message resonates with me strongest on the celebration of his birth.
Brian and I will put up a beautiful tree this year. We will hang a wreath on our door and put garland and fresh fruit on our mantle. We will host a celebration with our friends and I’ll play carols on the piano while everyone gathers around and sings beautifully out of tune. We will drink eggnog and have Christmas pudding. And when our guests leave, we will hug them tightly and wish them a Merry Christmas.
There may be a war on this kind of Christmas, but it cannot be won against me.
