Barry Goldwater was right, of course. The marriage of Christianity and politics has harmed the ability of the Republican Party to govern. Indeed, when you believe you are speaking for the Almighty, compromise is not an option.
But, in my view, this unholy union has so corrupted Christianity it has turned God into a freakish intolerant brute and has turned His followers into fearful gun-toting bigots intent on the destruction of gays, Muslims, and the loony left.
Please, for the love of God tell me how followers of Jesus Christ can disparage the poor by calling them lazy, unworthy of our aid? How can Christians listen to words filled with vile ignorant hatred call them to build walls to keep out the desperate refugee? How can they possibly imagine that a good guy should carry a gun or that we should ignore the damage that we have wrought upon this world that God created? The demagogues and pseudo preachers have turned Jesus Christ into a warrior and roiled angry terrible fear into the hearts of these children of God and they have most certainly lost their way.
The Republican Party has been filled with honorable statesmen in our history as a nation. They have been conservationists, defenders of the poor, God-fearing leaders in war and peace who welcomed the many immigrants who made this a great nation. From the beginning they fought for religious liberty by making sure the line separating church and state was clearly delineated. Today, 57% of the Republican Party wants to erase that line. This depraved alliance has turned the American dream and Christianity into an unspeakable nightmare.
