The last version of Daily Kos (DK4) provided automatic sig lines, and many members of the community used their sig lines to create income for themselves and to promote the Kos Katalogue.
This story begins a discussion about how to make sig lines in Daily Kos 5. I hope we all learn.
The purpose of this story is to learn to work with available tools and share tips for creating sig lines. Please defer any whining or moaning comments about the loss of automatic sig lines to another day, another story.
How to make a sig line in a box
The basic method is this:
- Copy a sig line, including the box.
- Start a Daily Kos comment.
- Paste the copied sig line in your comment.
- Edit the text to what you want, but keep the box.
- Post the comment.
- Open the comment in its own tab by right-clicking the date-stamp of the comment.
- Bookmark that comment.
- Before you write DK comments, open that comment.
- Copy your sig line.
- Paste your sig line where you need it. As long as you do not copy anything else, Ctrl + V (or Command + V on Macs) will paste your sig line.
(Reminder — links do not actually function until a comment is Submitted or a story is Published.)
How to include the box around your sig:
To include the box or frame, your selection must begin at the end of the line above the box. For example, to copy the box below this paragraph, select text starting immediately to the right of the numeral 1. Then select text down through the period that ends the sentence, immediately after the word “friends.” That is enough selected text to form a complete box.

Again, you do not have to include the bottom line of the box in the selected text in order to paste a complete box.
The second example of snoopydawg’s sig line shows the link with bold formatting.
What the tech?
Incidentally, the box around these sig lines is actually a simple Daily Kos table with the following choices selected in the Table Properties window:
- Rows 1
- Columns 1
- Headers None
- Alignment Left
- “Use Daily Kos Table Styles” unchecked. (A checked box is the default.)
(To open the Table Properties window, click the Table icon in the toolbar above the text area of the comment. The Table icon is immediately to the left of the Image Library icon.)

Wrap-up
Please feel free to copy the above sig lines, paste them in the comments of this story, and edit them to refine your sig line. If you need help with wording, please let us know.
If you lose track of this story, you can practice your sig line in any comment. You could post a comment at the bottom of a day-old story, and then reply to yourself with a sig-line-building comment.
You could also test your sig line in one of your previous stories using the method mettle fatigue described in How To Easily Improvise a DK5 Link.
If you have other examples of sig lines or other methods for creating sig lines, please share them with us! And please feel free to ask questions. If I cannot answer them, maybe someone else will.

How we spend our money is political. When you are considering the purchase of holiday gifts, why not support the work of a small business run by a Kossack?
