Much has been made in the political realm that Hillary Clinton is the presumptive presidential nominee for the Democratic Party, but she hasn't actually launched her campaign. Former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, a relative unknown on the national stage, is trying to show that he's a viable alternative to Mrs. Clinton. The Boston Globe is making the case of Elizabeth Warren as well. Some Democrats are saying, ABHC -- Anybody but Hillary Clinton for 2016.
Martin O’Malley made the rounds in Iowa this weekend where he blasted the GOP presidential contenders for their stance on income inequality.
Des Moines Register: “How ironic since their choices led to it,” he told The Des Moines Register in an interview Saturday. “This is their theory, and we tried it for the better part of these last 30 years: Concentrate wealth at the top, take regulation out of the equation and keep wages low. So for them now to say that they’re somehow very appalled and concerned about inequality is ironic, to put it most kindly.”
The
Boston Globe is making the case for Elizabeth Warren, who has repeatedly said she has no ambitions to run for the presidency.
Unlike Clinton, or any of the prospective Republican candidates, Warren has made closing the economic gaps in America her main political priority, in a career that has included standing up for homeowners facing illegal foreclosures and calling for more bankruptcy protections. If she runs, it’ll ensure that those issues take their rightful place at the center of the national political debate.
It will be interesting to see how this all plays out in the next few weeks. Martin O'Malley has less baggage than Hillary Clinton, but will he be able to draw interest and then commitment? Could he be the sleeper candidate for the Democrats?
