Like Tom Lehrer says,
"Life is like a sewer… what you get out of it depends on what you put into it."
But I don't think dear old Tom was talking about granny. Poor thing... spends nearly a decade confined to her tiny hole in the wall. Only to fall into an even tinier one, once she ventured outdoors. Not a k-hole people, (look up ketamine/party drug if you don't don't know what I'm talking about) an 'actual' hole. A manhole in fact. Scary huh?
What's worse is our dear old grandmother is agoraphobic! Janet Faal, bless her heart, had finally decided it was time to confront her demon -- the outside world. But seems the nightmares of her underworld were just not having it. Not one little bit. So instead, they let her have it... two black eyes, and a broken leg. That's what happens when you fall down an open manhole.
As Janet told The Daily Mail:
I took a step over - never in my life did I think there was a hole underneath, I thought it had just fallen over. The next thing I remember is the pain. It was awful.
I fell and smashed my face on the pallet, and I was in the hole with blood all over me and I couldn’t move.
Now if this were me, I would ask to be committed to a very soft cell. What a horrible backslide of progress. Janet herself believes the incident has set her attempt at putting agoraphobia behind her, back years. She now fears she may never leave her home again. Completely understandable, don't you think?
And it gets worse. How long do you think it took before help arrived? Almost an hour. Now that's a horror movie come to life. Think for a second about what else might be down there?
The only light in this tunnel of terror is the fact that Janet Faal survived the fall.
One has to wonder if she yelled, "Help, I've fallen and I can't get up!" (terrible I know... but just goes to show, that commercial is still in our heads)
