If the truth doesn't work, one anti-gay activist, Beverly Roberts of Concerned Women For America, seemingly has decided that lying is an acceptable way to get what she wants. Yes, she is a conservative Christian, but the lie is for the greater good (in her own mind). Progressive journalist, David Pakman, calls her moral relativism "stunning." What was the lie before a Texas state Senate committee hearing? She spoke about gay couples trying to force unwilling clergy to perform their marriages as if it not only had happened, but was rampant.
From The New Civil Rights Movement:
Earlier this week The New Civil Rights Movement reported on the testimony of Beverly Roberts, a regional director in Texas for the anti-gay, anti-choice group Concerned Women For America. Roberts appeared before a Texas Senate committee, telling Senators that same-sex couples are "demanding" ministers marry them, in violation of their faith and First Amendment rights.
Roberts asked, "why are homosexual couples in states where same-sex marriage is legal, demanding that ministers perform their marriage ceremonies?"
She also called these supposed instances of same-sex couples demanding ministers marry them "hate crimes," "targeted bigotry," and "bullying tactics."
As this was not factual, NCRM contacted Roberts. Her response made it clear her testimony was false.
The Texas legislature has a slew of anti-gay bills before it. The one that Ms. Roberts was there to discuss would shield clergy who do not wish to marry same-sex couples. Here is her testimony before the committee hearing.
