Credit where credit is due, Nate Silver and his team have done very well in predicting election outcomes over the past few election cycles. While Bernie has been polling pretty well in New Hampshire, FiveThirtyEight recommends that there are other things to look for when figuring out who the nominee will be.
Their critique of Bernie's chances is thoughtful and worth the two minutes to read. Bernie currently does not have high support in the non-Caucasian population and has no endorsements from governors, representatives or senators--not even his fellow Vermonter Patrick Leahy has endorsed him.
However, the seeds of of criticism also contain the prescriptions for success. If we want Bernie to win the nomination, as opposed to just pulling Hillary leftward during primary season, we need to do outreach to our relatives, friends and neighbors. We need to pressure politicians to endorse him over Hillary, and yes, I know it's a tough sell. And we will need to get out there and vote for him come primary season.
Do I feel Hillary is bad? No. If she's the Democratic candidate I will vote for her and I will not hold my nose to do so. I feel she would definitely be a good president.
That said, Bernie would be great in the White House, standing up for his beliefs that we all deserve a fair shake. He can't get there unless we all help.
All jokes about "vote early, vote often!" aside, the time to act is now. If we don't want America to slide backward then we need another Democrat in the White House. If we want to push forward, though, we don't need just another Democrat. Our best bet to join the rest of the industrialized world in finally being good to all of our citizens is Bernie.
If you want to toss a few bucks to his campaign, his website should be a good place to do it. You can volunteer there too.
FiveThirtyEight said that if Bernie wins the nomination, everything they know about polling would go out the window. While I am usually quite fond of their forecasts, this once I want to give them an outlier they'll never forget.
