The world of politics can be unpredictable. Sadly when you think someone is your friend they can become, what Brian Schneck of the United Auto Workers coined, your "frienemy." For years career politician Kathleen Rice (D-Garden City) who represents the 4th congressional district, has been touting herself as a friend to labor. Check out this old speech she gave at a union hall when she ran for District Attorney back in 2010. When the unions on Long Island funded her recent congressional campaign, provided volunteers, delivered votes and did their due diligence to send a “friend” to Washington, they were assured that this was someone who shares in their values. That trust and friendship is now gone.
The Trans Pacific Partnership has raised red flags in the labor, environmental and consumer rights community. Written in secret by the US Chamber of Commerce, this trade deal is bad for the American Worker. It’s a trade deal that enters into an agreement with countries like Malaysia, which are still active in the slave trade. In the house, for-sale corporate Republicans are in favor of the TPP and sadly President, Barack Obama is as well. He is telling the American citizenry that this trade deal is what we need for countries to "like us." C'mon BAM, your wrong on this one.
So when rookie Congresswoman Kathleen Rice, who assured us that she was going to have working people's back during her campaign, released a 1,000 word opinion editorial stating that she was going to support this trade deal, she basically made her bed and now she is lying in it. "Congresswoman Flip-Flop", or "Representative Rice-a-phonie" is only 6 months into her term and she has already made enemies with the very people who got her elected
In front of a 300 person anger rally on June 8th that in front of her district office, the NYS AFL-CIO announced that Rice will not be given the AFL-CIO endorsement when she runs for re-election. Check out who is bought Kathleen below and look out for the in-depth column on it next week in the Long Island Business News. Be sure to tune into UCOMM Radio this Sunday, June 14th at 9 pm on 77 WABC for the audio from the rally.
Rice's move in supporting Fast Track and the TPP is not just dumb, it's stupid.
