You probably know the topline numbers show an unchanged race nationally in the Dem primary raee according to the latest WaPo poll. But the crosstabs are the more interesting piece.
Among white Dem and Dem leaners, the race is: Clinton 58, Sanders 22, Webb 7, O'Malley 2.
Among non-white Dem and Dem leaners, the race is: Clinton 79, Sanders 9, Webb 1, O'Malley 1.
Among women Dem and Dem leaners, the race is: Clinton 76, Sanders 10, Webb 3, O'Malley 1.
Among men Dem and Dem leaners, the race is: Clinton 57, Sanders 23, Webb 6, O'Malley 2
Among no-college degree Dem and Dem leaners, the race is: Clinton 71, Sanders 11, Webb 5, O'Malley 2.
Among less than 50k earnings Dem and Dem leaners, the race is: Clinton 70, Sanders 12, Webb 5, O'Malley 2
Among greater than 50k earnings Dem and Dem leaners, the race is: Clinton 65, Sanders 21, Webb 4, O'Malley 2.
Among self identified liberal Dem and Dem leaners, the race is: Clinton 68, Sanders 24, Webb 2, O'Malley 0.
It's early days but where the work needs to go is pretty apparent - Sanders has made inroads with white college educated liberals who earn more than $50k per year. He breaks 20% nationally with each of these groups.
But he has made little headway with PoC, women and those who earn less than 50k.
Of course there is overlap in each of these groups, but as of now, Sanders has recreated the Dean coalition of 2004. That's not enough. But it's early days yet and much can change.
Sanders is also fortunate that the lily white states of Iowa and New Hampshire go first. Without that, I don't think he'd have a chance.
And for those wondering, in a similar time period in the 2008 race, the WaPo poll showed Clinton leading Obama by 45-30, but with these crosstab results:
Among whites, Clinton leads Obama by double digits, but the two run nearly neck-and-neck among African Americans: Forty-six percent would vote for Obama and 40 percent for Clinton.
And of course Edwards was a strong 3rd, with a pile of ABH votes waiting to be had. It's not 2008. And Sanders is not Obama. But there's time yet. We'll see what happens.
