"To hear is to forget,
to remember is to listen,
to do is to understand."
-- Ninpō Proverb ~ The Lady Toda --
Excerpt from Bernie's July 3rd email: So over the course of the next few weeks we will be releasing a series of policy proposals to address the major issues facing our nation. We’ll be discussing these issues at a number of nationwide organizing meetings taking place on July 29th.
In support of the upcoming July 29th #FeelTheBern National Campaign Meetings, I created a 3 part diary series on
Media Literacy. This diary is the third in the series:
- PART #1: ‘Clintonian Triangulation’-vs-Bernie's bold decisive stand #TBTF[#July29 #MediaLiteracy 1of3]
- PART #2: Bernie:“I believe change takes place from the bottom up” #5ViralAds[#July29 #MediaLiteracy 2of3]
- PART#3: Bern:‘People will make their own judgments about Hillary’#Listening[#July29 #MediaLiteracy 3of3]
Media Literacy (or 'media education') is a repertoire of competencies that enable people to analyze, evaluate, and create messages in a wide variety of media modes, genres, and formats.
The focus of this diary is judgement, listening and
Critical Thinking skills, to foster an
awakened electorate:
BARACK OBAMA: On the importance of the awakened electorate:
...and after a time, I came to understand that our cherished rights of liberty and equality depend on the active participation of an awakened electorate.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) talked to The Nation: “Now, I’ve known Hillary Clinton for many years. Let me confess: I like Hillary. I disagree with Hillary Clinton on many issues. My job is to differentiate myself from her on the issues—not by personal attacks. I’ve never run a negative ad in my life. Why not? First of all, in Vermont, they don’t work—and, frankly, I think increasingly around this country they don’t work. I really do believe that people want a candidate to come up with solutions to America’s problems rather than just attacking his or her opponent.”

Critical Thinking is integral to democracy:
...in critical social theory, it is the commitment to the social and political practice of participatory democracy; willingness to imagine or to remain open to considering alternative perspectives; willingness to integrate new or revised perspectives into our ways of thinking and acting; and willingness to foster criticality in others.
BERNIE: This is a different type of a campaign. This is a people’s campaign. Can we succeed? I think so... but maybe not. But I want to tell you something, because this gets to the heart of what this campaign is about. Why I need your help.
When I, ahhh.... My wife and I thought long and hard about whether I should do this... should run for President. And we considered three things:
Number one: Is there support in this country, for a message which says that it’s time we stood up to the billionaire class? And I went around the country and talked to a lot of people. And said, you know, I think that there is. that support. People have had enough. They want change. They want to take on the establishment and big money.
And the second question that my wife and I and close supporters talked about is... Could we raise enough money? And that was a hard one, because we knew that, you know, the big money interests are not gonna be supporting us. I thought that maybe we could raise enough money to not outspend our opponents, but in fact run a winning campaign. And I think we can do that. I’m feeling good about that.
And the third issue that we wanted to deal with on a personal level is that the nature of politics today, and media plays its role, as well, is not serious discussions about serious issues. That’s what we’re here to do today. And that’s what this campaign is about.
False Logic and Critical Thinking
I think it is impossible to listen to almost anything that has anything to do with politics, sales and marketing and to be honest, just about anything you see or hear about anything that is not shaping your opinion one way or another about who knows how many things with every sound that you hear or pictures you see or words that you read that is not trying to convince you of something or another.
Some messages are very bold. Some are very subtle. Some are hidden. Some are true and some are not and lots are in between.
On the side of discovering truth, the messages are designed to accurately present some facts and to then logically use the facts to advance by logic and evidence a point of view or argument.
On the other side, hiding the truth etc, messages are designed to present things as facts that are maybe not so factual and/or manipulate false logic techniques to block or divert or distort the presented "evidence" to give false information or to change the subject.
#Listening Matters:
Listening is an active process, it is not just sitting there thinking about what you are going to say next whilst someone else rambles on. Next time you watch people talking on TV especially political/social opposites. You can almost see the cogs whirring as each party is just catching key words, but not in fact listening to the whole. The sad thing is both people/groups know it is going on and tempers can flair. Listening is not telling other people to listen.
Cognitive listening & Bloom's Taxonomy
In the academic community, Bloom’s Taxonomy is often used to foster cognitive listening by providing a framework and leading questions. Hopefully, such cognitive listening tools might also foster greater discernment in political discussion, to better judge candidates based upon the issues and their respective policies and avoid unnecessary discord, since we all as democrats share the same values.
Bloom’s Taxonomy divides is a way of distinguishing the fundamental questions within the education system.
Cognitive
Skills in the cognitive domain revolve around knowledge, comprehension, and critical thinking on a particular topic. Traditional education tends to emphasize the skills in this domain, particularly the lower-order objectives. There are six levels in the taxonomy, moving through the lowest order processes to the highest:
Bloom’s Taxonomy divides the way people learn into three domains. One of these is the cognitive domain, which emphasizes intellectual outcomes. This domain is further divided into categories or levels. The key words used and the type of questions asked may aid in the establishment and encouragement of critical thinking, especially in the higher levels.
- KNOWLEDGE: rote memorization, recognition, or recall of facts
What is ...? How is ...? Where is ...?
- COMPREHENSION: understanding what the facts mean
How would you classify ...? How would you compare ...?
- APPLICATION: correct use of the facts, rules, or ideas
How would you use ...? How would you apply ...? What would result if ...?
- ANALYSIS: breaking down information into component parts
What are the parts or features of ...? How is this related to ...? Why do you think ...?
- SYNTHESIS: combination of facts, ideas, or information to make a new whole
What changes would you make to solve ...? How would you improve ...? What would happen if ...? Can you elaborate on the reason ...?
- EVALUATION: judging or forming an opinion about the information or situation
Do you agree with the actions ...? Do you agree with the outcomes ...? What is your opinion of ...? How would you prove ...? How would you disprove ...? Can you assess the value or importance of ...? Would it be better if ...? Why did they choose ...?
A Pragmatic Argument for Supporting Bernie Sanders: Rhetoric
So, despite all the policy differences between Hillary and Bernie, despite the simple fact (IMHO) that Bernie is obviously more progressive than Hillary...those are not the reasons I am voting for him in the primary. Really it comes down to this...I'm voting for Bernie because he will loudly, intelligently, and doggedly champion progressive values--legitimizing and normalizing progressive values. With luck, that will serve as a foundation to further move our country toward a more just society.
