It's popular to "credit" Donald Trump's rapid rise in the polls to his penchant for controversial and provocative statements. I think the real reason is much more simple, raw, and emotional.
Donald Trump doesn't lead in the polls because he calls Mexican immigrants "illegals, drug dealers and rapists."
He doesn't lead because he bashes the same Chinese economy that produces (er... produced) much of his branded product.
He doesn't lead because he still thinks Obama is not American.
Popular positions though these may be with the Republican base.
It's much, much simpler than that.
Donald Trump is winning because of his effective penchant to call his fellow candidates: "Losers."
You see, nothing terrifies Republicans more than the prospect of losing.
Losing a war, losing in diplomacy, losing our lofty status as the World's undisputed number one.
And nothing matters more to Republicans than winning. Just winning. Not leading, not governing, certainly not building a better future for the public at large.
Just winning. Winning, and then rubbing everyone's face in it. We won, you lost, we get our way..all the time. Winning and then getting to be the biggest asshole in the room. It's been their modus operandi since Gingrich took over the House.
Republicans cannot stand the thought of losing, above all else. Look at Mitt Romney's extensive self-delusion.
That kind of raw, emotional connection makes for powerful communication. Much more so than facts or stats. Certainly more than policy proposals.
Why can't the other candidates refute Donald Trump's "Loser" claim?
Because there's not a winner in the bunch. The GOP primary voters know that.
That's why Donald Trump is currently on top.
Cue Beck as we throw to commercial.
