Diane Guerrero came home to an
empty house one day. Her parents and brother were apprehended and deported to Columbia when she was still a teenager. As a US citizen she was allowed to stay, and she relied on friends and neighbors over the coming years. She became an actress and I personally love her in OITNB.
Luckily Diane is a 'success story' for US in that she survived and went on to become an actress on a hit series. Yet, when you listen to her story you can still hear the pain. How many children were even less fortunate?
There are children of immigrant families who work in farms and industry around this country both legally and illegally born in this nation each day. We depend on their parents to harvest our seeds and butcher our meat. Some of these children are born with birth defects from chemicals they and their parents are exposed to. The medical bills become our responsibility but few in this country make that connection. The parents are usually not so lucky.
Donald Trump and his ilk want to throw all of these children and their parents out and build a wall to keep them away. He might have employed a few illegals from time to time but no one can pin a thing on the Trump. The Trumpists are people who want to save a few bucks when they can, but they don't care a bit about the people who truly pay the price.
This is the arrogance that drives the discourse of the Republican Party.
More below the fold.
Why is this less of an issue here? Don't people make the connection? The Disenfranchised share in the disrespect brought upon them by the authorities.
We, as caring people, need to consider how we can weave the many stories of the powerless into a thread that undermines the callousness and brutal selfishness that holds so much power in this country.
