It seems that too often we read and hear about efforts of individuals and groups to invoke the differences between as a means of gaining control, rather than building on a foundation of unity to create a greater country and world. Consider the issue of abortion. While individuals disagree over the question of whether abortion should be legal, we can all agree that all children should be born into homes that will love and nurture them. Yet little do we hear about efforts to support and sustain such homes. Over the past decades, the number of abortions has decreased significantly, yet, to hear some, it is a rampant and increasingly popular method of birth control. The reality of abortion is not abortion itself, but the circumstances that bring it about, and those who seek to create disunity by insisting on a particular ideology do nothing to reduce or eliminate abortions; instead their one track focus keeps us from any solution. The circumstances leading to abortion, including birth control or lack thereof, poverty, drug and substance abuse, rape, incest, the highly sexualized culture in which we live and the pressure put on children to become sexually active at increasingly earlier ages, all contribute to the problem and need to be addressed if we are to resolve the issue. Together we can resolve many of the problems related to health care and especially reproductive health care. In disunity, we will continue to have sides calling each other names and contributing nothing to the betterment of the community
