Several days ago there was a diary on the Rec` list written by Slinkerwink informing us that Firedoglake was no more. The diary was read and rec`d many times over not just because of the excellent narrative, but because folks who read it knew what we were going to miss the next days to come.
Firedoglake editor-in-chief Jane Hamsher decided that is was time for her website to shut down. It was a very sad moment for me personally because I was an avid member and sometimes wrote short diaries using another name different than the one I use here at Daily Kos. I became a registered member at Firedoglake long before I came and joined Daily Kos.
I recall reading a story Jane wrote about how the name Firedoglake came to be what became one of the better websites that I had the privilege to be a registered member until I read Slinkerwink`s diary. But of course everyone knows how that website got its name. That information is everywhere when one types the name of the site.
I recall also Jane writing about the heart breaking experience she went through going into "dog`s" cage and holding him in her arms and watching him die. Jane Hamsher was at the time living under the curse of the deadly disease that is cancer.
Out of respect and trying to find out more about Jane`s decision to close her website I went and clicked the button under the name Firedoglake to see what I would get.
I found a mild surprise:
INTRODUCING SHADOWPROOF
Over the past decade at Firedoglake, we have had the privilege of being on the front lines of many critical reporting and advocacy projects. FDL’s work brought attention to and supported marijuana legalization, the Occupy movement, Keystone XL pipeline protests, Hurricane Sandy relief, Chelsea Manning, WikiLeaks, and John Kiriakou—just to name a few.
Today marks a new chapter. We are very pleased to introduce Shadowproof, a new independent press organization determined to support a diverse range of young freelance journalists and contributors exposing abuses of power in government and business. Shadowproof will shine light into the dark places where corruption hides, and elevate the voices of individuals who normally go unheard.
In December, Firedoglake editor-in-chief Jane Hamsher needed hip replacement surgery and put the website on hiatus. Soon after, Jane indicated she wanted to suspend operations indefinitely. Seeking to preserve Firedoglake’s journalistic legacy, we jumped at the opportunity to start our own project.
Reading the main reason for Jane to suspend her work at Firedoglake is a very sad thing for me to find. I have to think that Jane Hamsher`s surgery is a personal matter and I will leave it at that.
Whether the video below is a tribute and farewell for Jane Hamsher I cannot tell. I do hope that you think so and that it is the appropriate good-bye although her work will continue to be perfomed by those loyal followers and assistants.
It was indeed a very touching time for me to click the name Firedoglake and find that we now have this new website to carry on what Jane Hamsher started I found that it appears to be a sincere progressive forum that hopefully become as famous as the one they seem to want to emulate, match or surpass.
I came away impressed when I noted that one of my favorite topics appeared on one of their first presentations.
I got a kick from watching what seems like a Fox News mimic on immigration. Here the narrators do some mean ass rapping immigration.
Enjoy.
For those of you who knew Firedoglake and Jane Hamsher, I think it should be commendable for anyone to send Jane well wishes for a speedy recovery. I am sure that your message will be delivered.
