The Republican problem of never seeing past your self.
It's a great thing that Bruce Jenner can now be Caitlyn and be supported so strongly and openly. This wouldn't have been possible just a few short years ago. Ironically, the reason it took so long for LGBT marriage equality and general public acceptance was due to the efforts, voting, and ideology of people like Bruce Jenner, the conservative republican.
Even after all he has gone through, and how late in life he is finally able to openly be the person he felt he was, he still struggles with the idea of same-sex marriage. It boggles the mind. The same struggle he went through and wins awards for courage, is the same struggle gays have always endured. But he never considered that when he voted, or supported Republicans trying to block equal rights or perpetuating homophobia until he could personally benefit from a change in our cultural attitude. Equal rights is great, now that he can take advantage of it. The fact that there is less public shaming for coming out as gay or transgender is great for him now but where was his voice when he sat on the sidelines with the other intolerant bigots. He/she is the problem.
Only now that he has been afforded the opportunity to be openly the person he always felt he was does he reluctantly except the idea of gay marriage and equality. Only when he personally benefits is he able to understand that others might feel the same way. Color me unimpressed. I don't need to be shot to empathize with the shooting victim. I don't need to be black to sympathize with the struggles and harassment of minorities in our culture, and I sure as hell don't need to be gay or transgender to empathize with the struggles and negative stigma that the LGBT community has had to deal with for ages. Cait is no role model. She is the problem.
