Brian Mason is breaking free of the crazy in Kentucky
There is another fight brewing at the Rowan County Clerk's office in Kentucky. Deputy Clerk Brian Mason says that he'll continue issuing marriage licenses to all who qualify under the law:
A deputy county clerk in Kentucky says that even if his boss tells him to stop issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, he will tell her he can't obey her and will instead follow a judge's order.
Brian Mason works for Rowan County clerk Kim Davis, who was jailed for five days over her refusal to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Davis was released Tuesday. A federal judge warned her not to interfere with licensing; deputy clerks have been issuing them in her absence. But Davis' lawyers have said she can't violate her conscience, and she's repeatedly cited her beliefs about homosexuality as an apostolic Christian. The attorneys wouldn't say exactly what she'll do when she returns to work Friday or Monday.
Mason said Wednesday that licenses would be granted to anyone seeking them. He told reporters that if Davis tells him to stop, he will tell her no. Mason says he would have to follow the judge's order to issue licenses.
Good for you, Brian Mason! At this point, he needs to seriously considering running for county clerk at the next available opportunity. The people of Kentucky and Rowan County deserve someone who will fulfill the duties they are paid to do by the taxpayers.
Meanwhile, Kim Davis' increasingly crazy supporters are calling for the deputy clerks who are following the law to be fired:
Ante Pavkovic, one of the people who helped organize pro-Davis rallies outside the Grayson, Kentucky, detention center where Davis was jailed, lectured the deputy clerks not to violate their oaths of office, like Bunning and the U.S. Supreme Court justices who backed gay marriage did.
"Do not join them in this any further, and if you can't do that, then you should just quit," Pavkovic, 49, of North Carolina, said, standing in the clerk's office in Morehead, Kentucky.
He waved a sign in the faces of the deputy clerks that read, "Fire the cowardly clerks that are lawbreakers." He was asked to leave by a deputy sheriff.
