If the Koch brothers and other dirty polluters have their way, the greater Grand Canyon could soon turn into a mining wasteland.
You read that right: The Koch brothers’ shady network is trying to open up areas right next to the Grand Canyon, one of the most treasured places on Earth, to highly toxic uranium mining. Radioactive uranium mining could damage the Grand Canyon for decades to come, meaning future generations would never get to see, explore, and marvel at the Grand Canyon as it is now.
But we have a serious chance of saving it — not just from this current threat, but forever.
We need President Obama to make the greater Grand Canyon a national monument. And that’s only going to happen if he hears from you today.
Help us gather 50,000 signatures to tell President Obama: Permanently protect the greater Grand Canyon from mining »
Uranium mining is seriously disgusting, creating radioactive dust, toxic waste, and poisoned drinking water. As one of the most endangered historic places in the U.S., the already fragile ecosystem of the Grand Canyon simply cannot face this kind of risk and expect to survive.
The vast majority of Arizonans agree. In fact, 80% of them support making the greater Grand Canyon into a national monument to permanently protect it for future generations. Arizona’s Native American tribes, small businesses, and conservation groups are all extremely vocal in saying no to the mining. And yet most of Arizona’s delegation, including Senator
John McCain and Representative Paul Gosar, are pushing hard for the mining under the guise of opposing federal overreach.
We see right through them.
There’s little doubt that the extreme right’s opposition to protecting public lands stems from Big Polluter backers like the Koch brothers, who are itching to get their hands on America’s remaining untouched places.
That’s why it’s more important than ever that we speak up today and tell President Obama to permanently protect the greater Grand Canyon.
Earlier this year after thousands of LCV members demanded action, President Obama permanently protected 1.8 million acres of lands in the California desert by creating three new national monuments. With that designation, President Obama has now protected more than 3.5 million acres of lands.
We know that when LCV members like you speak up, President Obama listens! And this may be one of the most important times that we speak up for our public lands.
Don’t let the Grand Canyon be destroyed by Big Polluter greed. Help us gather 50,000 signatures today!
The greater Grand Canyon is far too important to our national heritage to sit this round against the Koch brothers out. Please, join me today in urging President Obama to protect the natural wonder of the Grand Canyon.
Sincerely,
