Pennsylvania Republican Sen. Pat Toomey is one of those Republicans up for reelection this year who really, really doesn't want to share ballot space with Donald Trump. After months and months of pretending Trump doesn't exist, Toomey has apparently decided that it's his job to lecture The Donald on civility and how to be a Republican.
Start by uniting the Republican Party that you seek to lead. […]
Then you must unite our country. For too long, too many politicians have sought to divide us by race, sex, income, and geography, pitting Americans against one another in a cynical effort to advance their political interests rather than our nation. We need to recognize that our shared values and common interests are much greater than our differences.
Finally, rather than attacking those who speak a contrary word about you or your positions, consider the value of constructive advice. Many of your critics are nothing more than political opponents who want your defeat. But some of your critics actually share the deep frustration with the direction of our country and our political class that has propelled your candidacy. Sometimes your critics might have a point. If you listen more, and talk less, you might even win some of them over. You will have to in order to be successful.
To which Donald Trump will say "Pat who?" The thing is, up until this point Toomey has studiously avoided saying anything at all about Trump. He spent all of last week back home in Pennsylvania doing his damnedest to avoid talking to the local press about Trump. Until he was finally caught on camera, where he still refused to utter that dreaded name: "Yeah, I intend to support the eventual nominee of our party."
That's after nearly a year of a Trump campaign full of outrageous, divisive, bigoted, insulting rhetoric in which Toomey didn't say "boo," much less castigate the front-runner for his incivility. What's behind Toomey's newfound recognition of Trump? A solid Democratic opponent in Katie McGinty, who just won her primary. Now Toomey feels like he has to distance himself from the nominee, at the same time he's saying he'll support him. Much too little, Toomey, and much too late.
Please send $3 to Katie McGinty to send Pat Toomey packing.
