Both Donald Trump and Mike Pence have gone after the “biased” media outlets for their suggestion that Trump actually insinuated that gun rights advocates might have to knock off Hillary Rodham Clinton in defense of their Second Amendment rights. Willing crowds adapted the catchy chant, “Lock Her Up!” with the stirring refrain, “Lock Them Up!”
These are our fellow citizens, parents, homeowners, businesspeople, neighbors. Is this an invasion of the body snatchers? What is going on?
It’s all about the guns. All of it. OK, there’s some White Power stuff around the edges and frustrated displaced workers are feeling left out, but bottom line is fear that the next Democratic administration will pull together a majority in the House and Senate and FINALLY stop the sale of over-the-counter assault weapons and FINALLY agree that background checks probably ought to be carried out at the Guns, Knives, and Ammo fairs held somewhere every weekend of the year. No rides or cotton candy, but more than enough stopping power to handle Democrats with pitchforks besieging Castle Colt.
One commentator who attended both conventions noted that at the Democratic Convention, signs were held aloft that said, Girls Just Want To Have Fundamental Rights”, while in Cleveland, similar placards read, “Girls Just Want To Have Guns.”
I know quite a lot of people who have guns. Almost all of them have a gun safe; virtually none of them carry weapons to the supermarket, although in 45 states, a licensed gun owner can carry a handgun openly. I’m pretty sure none of them have the Barrett M82 50 Caliber Sniper Rifle, bullet range five miles, capable of bringing down a helicopter, but if they did want one, it’s available on-line from Guns America –

I know that fear causes us to react more powerfully than reason might dictate, and I know that those on the far side of gun advocacy fear that a Democratic administration will take their guns away, but at some level I have to admit that I just can’t understand how the protection of an individual’s right to buy a sniper rifle capable of taking down a tank.
But girls just want to have guns, and the NRA and state legislatures push the envelope again and again. Hunting and target shooting, sure. Protecting home and hearth… uh … a little dicey. Packing to attend class? Come on.
This week, the President of the University of Texas and Texas’ Attorney General responded to a law suit brought by professors at the University of Texas by declaring that any professor who bars guns from the classroom will be disciplined by the university.
“Faculty members are aware that state law provides that guns can be carried on campus, and that the president has not made a rule excluding them from classrooms,” said the brief filed this week. “As a result, any individual professor who attempts to establish such prohibition is subject to discipline.”
Harry Sarfo is a German citizen who was radicalized when in prison, went to Syria for training with ISIS and defected after seeing the actual practices of the organization, including capturing women to be used as sex slaves. He was repeatedly asked if he was willing to return to Germany as a suicide bomber but declined. He learned that agents of ISIS in Europe were primarily recruited from the ranks of convicted felons, as they might have access to weapons in the underworld that ordinary citizens could not possess. When asked about America?
“For America and Canada, it’s much easier for them to get them over the social network, because they say the Americans are dumb — they have open gun policies,” Sarfo said from a prison in Germany. “They say we can radicalize them easily, and if they have no prior record, they can buy guns, so we don’t need to have a contact man who has to provide guns for them.”
How dumb are we? We’ll find out in November.
