For most of my life my cut has been in a rut. Sometime during my twenties, I settled into a hairstyle that hadn’t much evolved in 30 years. It was a classic hairstyle for men — short sides, bit more on top and tapered to a fault in the back. The only radical change my hair has seen has been the generous amount of gray mother nature has bestowed on me.
Last February and with my husband’s blessing, I quit my job. I decided to take a self-granted sabbatical for a year before going back to work. Among the many opportunities this presented was the chance to grow out my hair for the first time in my life. The last real haircut I got was a year ago today. I know, because I recently looked at my bank statements to find out.
What a year it has been, hair-wise. I knew it would be a challenge, but I never fully realized just how much it would impact my life. After about two months had passed, I began to resemble a muppet, and not one of the good looking muppets either. I took to wearing hats when I went out in public. That led to nausea inducing hat-head.
By the time summer had slipped by, I stopped resembling anything nearly as cute as a muppet and began to look rather deranged. My locks were a hot mess of indecision on which way to go any given day. Most of the time they wanted to bungee jump in my face. My hair is fine and fairly straight. Or it had been up until this point. By the end of this period, I was sporting what could only be described as a flip. In these darkest hours I despaired and was ready to abandon Project Hippie by razor.
Yet something wonderful began to happen in early December. My hair was finally beginning to look like what I had envisioned. It was beginning to hang well by its shear weight. It was responding well to the changes I made to suitably maintain long hair. Exactly one year to the date of my last true haircut, I am proudly flying my freak mane before the world.
The next stage is going to be great fun for me. One of Brian’s Christmas presents was to foot the bill for consultations and a styling by any salon of my choosing. I finally have enough canvass to work with. I’ve been schlepping through picture after picture of styles that might suit me. Once I get it just right, I plan on changing my avatar to me and my new hair.

In her own diary, CrimsonQuillfeather made this comment.
This is the part that resonated with me: "... I want to be realistic about the fact that a Democrat is always going to be better than a Republican."
Really, I think that's all that needs to be said.
