Republican Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey embodies what's happening in that DCCC poll released earlier today: he's damned if he drops Trump, and he's damed if he doesn't. So he's staying atop that pokey, miserable fence, refusing to either say he's going to disavow Trump, or stick with the guy—a question he's going to have to answer every single day until makes a decision.
Toomey said definitively he would not vote for Democrat Hillary Clinton -- calling her "one of the most flawed nominees in the history of the republic," -- but left open the possibility that he might eventually support Trump, his party's nominee.
Locked in one of the country's toughest Senate races, Toomey has not endorsed Trump and reiterated Tuesday that he has "serious reservations, serious concerns," about the New Yorker. But when asked if he could rule out backing Trump, Toomey said, "I remain unpersuaded."
Maybe Toomey is holding out hope that Trump's forces can actually sway the election in Pennsylvania by keeping "those" people out of the polls in Philadelphia, and that'll carry him through. Maybe he thinks it's principled to go down with the SS GOP.
Whatever Toomey's thinking, he's stuck in a really shitty place, just like most of the rest of the Republicans facing re-election. Which is no more than they deserve.
