Today, the No Red Button campaign came out with a chilling new anti-Trump ad.
This video is easily one of the most powerful things I’ve seen during my two years campaigning against nuclear weapons. It illuminates the threat posed by Trump’s finger on the button and really brings it home the irreversible horrors nuclear weapons are designed to inflict.
It’s a wake up call for how much we have to lose in this election.
Basically all of the issues important to me are under attack by Trump. His xenophobic and nativist rhetoric puts people at risk at home and abroad. At a time when black and brown folks are being killed by police with impunity, Trump’s racism -- and refusal to acknowledge institutionalized bias -- is reprehensible. His misogyny and casual “locker room talk” (read: bragging) about sexual assault threatens all women, everywhere.
Unfortunately, this list could go on and on. The man is a monster. And if he becomes president (and gains access to the nuclear codes), we are all at risk of becoming his next prey.
There is so much at stake in this election that I haven’t been able to sit on the sidelines. Instead, I’ve hit the streets and taken action to fight Trump and everything he stands for. From working on the No Red Button campaign to participating in civil disobedience and getting arrested with my fellow millennials at AllofUs, I have made the intentional choice to stand up for my personal values of justice, love, and equality.
If Donald Trump becomes president and gains unchecked authority to launch a nuclear strike on a whim, all of the issues we care about and fight for every day could cease to matter. When it comes to nuclear weapons, quite literally everything we know and love is at stake.
Can you imagine what such a blatantly racist, revenge-hungry xenophobe would do with our nuclear arsenal? The last time we had such an overt racist with that kind of power, two hundred thousand Japanese citizens were murdered. With impunity.
I feel a moral obligation to ensure that the type of horror shown in this new ad does not happen ever again. That starts by making sure Trump does not become president. I hope you’re with me.
