This one is from Tom Nichols, who is among other things is a Professor at the Naval War College and a former Senate aide. He has made clear that he is a Never Trumper. He is NOT a fan of Hillary Clinton.
In July, he had a piece in The New York Times Magazine titled Never-Trump Confidential which is worth reading.
Now he is drawing an important line in the sand.
The storm follows:
Now just a bit of commentary from my perspective
From tweet # 8
In effect, Trump has removed politics from this election. It's now about where we all stand on protecting our system of government.
From tweet # 10
If you think this is still abt SCOTUS or abortion or anything but your right to vote without threats or foreign influence, you're wrong.
and from tweet # 11
Take your arguments about right vs left somewhere else. In my view, this is now an election solely about preserving our democracy.
Let me repeat that final sentence:
In my view, this is now an election solely about preserving our democracy.
Nichols was already a Never Trump person. What he has to say will have little influence upon committed Trump supporters.
But by reframing this as being about preserving our democracy, specifically in response to Trump’s remarks about the election being rigged, etc., this potentially has influence upon people who are opposed to Clinton, or think it is about SCOTUS, etc.
Will it have a huge impact? Probably not.
But it is one more example of people drawing a line that leaves Donald Trump on the other side.
