Marco Rubio’s message to the people of Florida: Please ignore my weasel words, God willing, and elect me to the Senate to keep my presidential hopes alive so I can leave the Senate two years before my term is up. In a debate with his Democratic opponent, Patrick Murphy, Rubio got the inevitable question of whether he would serve out a six-year term:
"I'm going to serve six years in the United States Senate, God willing, and I'm looking forward to it," Rubio said, before he and Murphy exchanged attacks over who could do more to protect the Everglades.
The “God willing” evasion was duly noted and Rubio was pressed on the question. Three more times he slipped that “God willing” into his answers, as if God is responsible for his own personal ambition to get the hell out of the Senate.
Florida voters may recall that before he decided he’d have a better shot at president in 2020 as a sitting senator than as a guy who’d been a senator for a while and then gone off to make a bunch of money after losing a presidential primary, Rubio was insisting that:
Rubio has gone back on his word there, but voters can still make it happen.
