Here are 2 candidates running for the Harris County Board of Education. Sherrie Matula is running for Position 1, Precinct 2. Marilyn Burgess is running for Position 2, Precinct 4.
The Harris County Board of Education is an obscure body of elected officials. This board consists of 7 trustees, 3 elected by the county at large, the others elected from each of the 4 County Commissioners’ Precincts.
Recently some Democrats have used this board to promote educational reforms. Some Republicans have been advocating abolition of this board.
Sherrie Matula has a Bachelor of Science degree in education from the University of Houston. She served 2 terms on school board of the Clear Creek Independent School District. She taught 25 years in the Clear Creek and Pasadena school systems. She was a Board member for the Texas State Teachers Association, and served as president of the Galveston County Education District. Precinct 2 is in the eastern part of Harris County.
Marilyn Burgess has a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Louisiana State University. She is a CPA. She is running to succeed an outgoing trustee who is current president of the board. She has served for 4 years as the Executive Director of the Texas Parent Teacher Association. Precinct 4 is in the north part of Harris County.
Campaigns cost money and your donations would be appreciated. You can donate through donation pages on the candidates’ websites.
Diane Trautman is a member but is not on the ballot this year. Recently at a meeting of the Harris County Democratic Party she gave a talk about the school-to-prison pipeline. I did not attend but friends of mine were well impressed.
