Faced with the prospect of a future President Hillary Clinton nominating the much younger Sri Srinivasan for the open Supreme Court seat, or someone even more liberal, Mitch McConnell has reconsidered his attempts to block Justice Merrick Garland for the Supreme Court. An official press statement from Senator McConnell’s staff was recently released:
Justice Garland is eminently qualified. It would be a dereliction of duty for the Senate to delay even a single day the confirmation of this fine justice. It is thus in the nation’s interest to interrupt this campaign season in order to do the work that the voters previously elected us to do. I am thus calling back my fellow Senators into a Special Session to make sure Justice Garland is immediately confirmed.
Retiring Senator Harry Reid’s remaining staff are reported to have had to answer numerous phone calls from the distinguished Senator of Kentucky. A transcript of one of the phone calls has recently been made available to the media:
Pppllleeeaase. Ccann’t we jjjustt talllk?
Spokespersons for Senator Reid were not available for official comment, though there were reports that sounds of laughter could be heard in the background. One reporter claimed to hear clinking as well.
Previous discussions to consider Justice Garland during a lame duck session received a negative response from Senator Reid’s office.
