Progress continues on Aji and Wings’ house, thanks to you, their friends and customers! Last time, the roof was being covered with BRAI® roofing material, which is bonded to the roof surface with a torch. At right, the crew finish wrapping it around the edges of the parapets at the sides of the roof, so that there are no seams at the edges of the (sloped) horizontal surface.
The next step is to prepare the exterior walls for plastering. The walls will be sheathed in stucco paper, a heavy paper that serves as a vapor barrier, and chicken wire, and metal lath will be applied to the bottoms of the walls and edges of the windows. There are some more pictures below the fold, AND we are delighted to offer a $500 matching offer from an anonymous donor, so that anyone who wishes to help out with this effort today can see their generosity doubled!
Above, the east side of the first floor has been covered with the stucco paper and chicken wire. You’ll recall that the first floor is adobe brick, so it is slower going than the upper (frame) floor will be. The chicken wire will help the wet adobe plaster adhere to the building. You can see the lath along the bottom of the wall in the large top photo, behind She-Wolf — it’s a finer mesh than the chicken wire. (See Aji’s blog entry here.)
The next big purchase needed to close up the building before winter are windows and doors. That’s a BIG purchase, so we continue to beg you to continue to share the YouCaring page via social media, email, and word of mouth. Don’t forget, before the interior work can start, a whole new septic field has to be dug before the ground freezes — that, too, is a big-ticket item.
Believe it or not, there’s much more expense to this project than you see in the YouCaring goal, and Wings and Aji are paying for that plus their regular living expenses out of their business selling Wings’ (and others’) Native arts, including jewelry and other silver, pottery, leatherwork, drums, photography, and more.
Please also continue to share Wings’ silver website. (It’s cutting it mighty close to place special orders for the winter holidays, at this point, but there is existing inventory to shop from as well. Use the contact page to place any order.) An earlier diary by kishik, found here, provides links to each gallery on Wings’ website, for ease of navigation by mobile users. And this diary by belinda ridgewood explains how to navigate Wings’ site on a desktop.
Many, many thanks to everyone who’s helped bring the house this far!!! Don’t forget, the next $500 donated, via YouCaring, PayPal, or US mail, will be matched!
How To Help:
- The YouCaring fundraiser allows you to donate specifically to this cause. You can also share the fundraiser via social networks by using the “Grab Our Widget” button (and other social media buttons) on that page.
- Their Amazon wishlist mostly supports the health needs of their rescue animals and themselves, if that’s more your style.
- Purchases from Wings Silverworks will help them make a living the way they’d prefer, by selling Wings’ work as an exceptionally talented NDN silversmith and photographer. Here’s a diary that describes how to browse and buy at Wings’ web gallery, including how to look at available photographs. (Take a look at this gorgeous one from this week!)
- If you prefer, donate via PayPal at Aji’s blog, or at her Tumblr blog where she posts her own writing and photography.
- Kosmail belinda ridgewood if you absolutely need to donate by mailing a paper check.
- And Tweet, share on FaceBook, tip/rec/republish on Daily Kos, randomly email your friends about it, drop it into casual conversations. This seems minor, but it is not! When you share, please link to this YouCaring page, or embed the widget!
