Nevada Republican Joe Heck just doesn't know what to do with Donald Trump. He was happily running with the guy, even saying he was hunky-dory with Trump's tiny finger on the nuclear button. Then the infamous "pussy" tape came out and, realizing that many of his would-be voters claim that as part of their anatomy and maybe he really couldn't endorse that, he dumped Trump. Which enraged his Republican base. Since then, Heck has been doing an extremely awkward dance, which ended up in him telling Nevadans they don't have a right to know who he's going to vote for. But that pesky public, they insist on getting a better answer, and Heck can't twist his way out of it—no matter how hard he tries.
WASHINGTON - Republican Rep. Joe Heck is struggling on the question of Donald Trump’s candidacy, saying he would be a good commander in chief but refusing to say whether he would vote for the presidential nominee. […]
“I think that if you meet the constitutional qualifications and you’re selected by the Republican party then you’re qualified to be president,” Heck said.
Asked about Trump as commander in chief, the GOP congressman said he expected Trump to surround himself with good people “and so I think that between the two candidates Donald Trump will be a good commander in chief.”
But, Heck still wouldn’t say if he’s voting for Trump.
“We still have six days before I walk into the booth … We’re going to wait and see what happens … we’re working through it but on Nov. 8 I’ll have a decision.”
Really, Heck? You're not going to say that you'll vote for Donald Trump, but you will say you think he'd be the better commander in chief? What kind of sense does that make? No kind of sense, as a follow-up statement from his campaign demonstrates.
Can you pitch in with $3 to help Catherine Cortez Masto beat Joe Heck?
Senator Harry Reid is retiring. We must keep this seat in Democratic hands with Catherine Cortez Masto. Click here to volunteer on the ground in Nevada today.
"My position on the presidential race has not changed. […] I said "I think whomever the next commander in chief is, they're going to need to surround themselves with military leaders that will provide them with the expert advice that they need to keep the country safe and make sure our men and women in uniform have the tools and the resources they need to do the jobs we asked them to do.'"
That really clarifies things, huh? What he is willing to say out loud is that he won't vote for Hillary—which must be his super-secret way of telling Trump voters that he really is with them but he just can't say it out loud. Which tells you everything you need to know about Joe Heck.
