The FBI’s job was to look for evidence of wrong-doing. They closed the investigation because an exhaustive review of over 30,000 emails found no such evidence.
I’ve lived, and followed the news, for a fairly long time. I have a sense of what it means when a public official announces the re-opening of an investigation. Usually, it means new evidence, with clear meaning, that the previous conclusion was wrong. The Innocence Project, for example, has made the news repeatedly by unearthing exculpatory evidence. Again and again, investigations were reopened, and 343 wrongfully convicted people have been freed.
What did Comey have? A chance to read email exchanges between Hillary Clinton and an associate as stored on that associate’s machine. Probably just copies of the same old emails, although taken from a different device. This comes after Clinton’s exoneration by the FBI, and comes with no fresh hint, whatsoever, of any wrong-doing.
We have ALL lived a long time. We ALL expect “re-opened the investigation” to mean “because of explosive new evidence.” I will remember for years exactly how I felt hearing the news of Comey’s letter, like I remember September 11th. The changes in the polls were immediate, and severe, and directly attributable to Comey’s irresponsible announcement, even though there’s nothing there but innuendo.
Every day of silence from Comey since last Friday, every day he fails to say, “By the way, we are finding nothing of interest”, he compounds the damage to our country from his partisan interference.
Comey, you have an obligation to clarify. And apologize. And resign.
