Does Melania Trump know who she’s married to? At a speech in Cleveland on Thursday, Trump said that if she became the first lady her cause would be … wait for it … putting an end to bullying on social media. (Pause for laughter, cue hypocrisy.) Yes, Trump, who is married to the biggest bully of them all, called for an end to online bullying of children and teens. But adults? They’re on their own.
“As adults, many of us are able to handle mean words, even lies.”
Right. Back to that in a minute.
This was Trump’s first solo speech since the Republican National Convention in July where she plagiarized a portion of a speech First Lady Michelle Obama delivered in 2008. Since then she has been largely absent from the campaign trail. If she or the campaign thought the speech would reintroduce her to voters in a positive way they should have picked another topic, like, all that money her husband said he donated to charity. (Oh wait, he hasn’t).
It’s possible Melania Trump lives in a bubble so small she’s never been online, but her husband certainly has and presumably she knows him and some of his habits. Donald Trump spends his Twitter-time attacking everyone it seems, but, according to the New York Times, at least 282 people, including, of course, Hillary Clinton, President Barack Obama, Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT), former Secretary of Defense Colin Powell, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), President George W. Bush, President George H.W. Bush, journalists of every stripe—it’s a wonder he has time to sleep.
The sad, despicable fact is that he has spent so much time and energy bullying people in a very public way, that he has in essence given permission for children to do the same, which is, after all, what Melania Trump wants to avoid.
The largest teachers union in the country is launching a six-figure advertising campaign accusing GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump of playing a role in the bullying and harassment of certain students, including Latinos, Muslims and those with disabilities.
The digital media and direct mail buy will run in nine swing states and drive home what the 3 million-member National Education Association is calling the "Trump Effect."
Maybe she should talk to her husband about that.
