Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell finally emerged from his shell Wednesday morning to speak Donald Trump's name, something he'd successfully avoided doing for months.
"I congratulate President-elect Trump on his historic election. After eight years of the Obama administration, the American people have chosen a new direction for our nation," he said in a statement. "President-elect Trump has a significant opportunity to bring our nation together."
He doesn't have that opportunity, actually, as the actual votes of the country would have elected Hillary Clinton, who continues to lead in the popular vote. And bringing our nation together is most definitely not on Trump's agenda. Bringing the nation together is in fact exactly the opposite of what Trump would like to do. Unless by the "nation" McConnell means all the white people. With money. Which when it comes down to it are the only people who've ever mattered to Republicans.
But hey, Trump is all yours now, Mitch. Warts and all. He will actually have to try some governing, now that there's a White House, a Senate, and a House all of the same party. It's a deeply divided party that just elected a mad man to lead them—and make no mistake—Trump is not going to let House Speaker Paul Ryan (if he keeps that job) or McConnell take the lead.
