You can say all manner of evil about Donald Trump and his campaign (and you’d probably be right), but there’s something that his campaign did very well that Democrats need to learn from and use...his rejection of the mainstream media and embracing of social media.
Something that seems to never get factored into strategies for success (but which worked well for Trump) was the impact of social media and it being the way many people are getting their information. We all focus on the “mainstream media” which is TV and print news but are not accepting of the fact that the reality is that right now social media is mainstream media.
Like many people on this site have noticed many stories are being talked about for days on social media before it even gets noticed or picked up by MSM. It’s because MSM is getting their news from social media.
What Trump (with some help from the Russians) figured out was that if they drove the conversation on social media they would drive the conversation on all media. Say what you will about their fake news and their methods but you have to admit it is a smart strategy.
I think if the Democratic Party really wants to start getting movement there needs to be an acceptance of the fact that the cheese has indeed been moved and that getting your message out means driving the dialog on social media.
I think the Democratic Party is actually in a position to grow strong and dominate in the future. We’ve got the demographics in our favor, more people are woke and ready to mobilize, hell we won the popular vote. I just think that we also need to have a real plan for driving the conversation on social media to reach more people in the future.
