Campaign Action
So how do you reward your crazy xenophobic base, the one that delivered a losing-yet-victorious ticket to the White House? The same base promised a glorious wall paid for by Mexico, so bigly that it would thwart the world’s tallest ladder AND the world’s biggest shovel?
You reward them by sucker-punching them in the face.
Let’s absorb the magnitude of the [Andrew] Puzder appointment. Trump’s signature issue was immigration restriction. Number 1.
He slammed hard the Bush family in general and Jeb Bush in particular as weak and low energy on immigration.
The Labor Department enforces immigration law in the workplace — the key way that immigration laws are enforced.
And the person Trump names to head Labor? Perhaps the most outspoken advocate of Bush-style immigration policy in US business community!
Now don’t be deceived; Puzder doesn’t care about these immigrants as people. Puzder runs the company that owns shit-outfits Hardee’s and Carl’s Jr. He wants those immigrants for low-wage labor, keeping his cost of business down.
What role do less-skilled immigrants play in the American economy, and why do we need them? At AEI on Tuesday, experts gathered to discuss these pressing questions as the immigration debate rages on in Congress.
Andrew Puzder of CKE Restaurants emphasized the need for low-skilled workers in the high-turnover fast food industry.
He’s also an ardent foe of Trump-style walls:
Still, we already know that Trump’s glorious wall has been demoted to “fence” status. And pretty soon, it’ll probably be a “grassy strip.” Trump doesn’t have time to deal with stupid campaign promises! He has a federal treasury to raid!
But it is telling that Trump hasn’t even bothered to mask his disdain for his voters. Screw his tremendous wall, let’s get a guy who wants LESS fence! (Heck, I’m with Puzder on immigration, if for different reasons.) Drain the swamp? Lets stock it with more alligators! Crony capitalism is bad? Here, let’s pay Carrier $7 million so they can ship 1,250 jobs to Mexico!
And don’t think Trump’s allies aren’t noticing. From his own fawners at Breitbart:
Pro-American immigration reformers and advocates for higher-wages are hammering Donald Trump’s selection of a cheap-labor, migration-boosting employer to run the Department of Labor.
The opponents — some of whom backed Trump’s pro-American, immigration-reducing promises in the election — are rallying opposition to Puzder’s appointment via the twitter hashtag, #NeverPuzder.
The pro-Americans who are pro-America in the pro-America world are totally stunned that Trump’s pro-American rhetoric might not be so pro-American given his choice of a non-pro-American to head an agency tasked with being pro-American. How un-pro-American! Let’s do a twitter hashtag!
We already know that Trump could shoot someone on 5th Avenue, and his supporters wouldn’t care. But is he similarly immune to death-by-a-thousand papercuts? We shall see.
