First things, first. I will be supporting WHOMEVER the Democratic Party nominates to stand for the Presidency. Humanity is in too precarious a position to put the nuclear button under the finger of a symbol of all that is wrong with our nation.
And I keep getting those orange emails asking for my opinion in the form of a contribution. That said, what follows is my breakup letter with Hillary for the primaries.
Dear Hillary,
So… I’m looking at my email Inbox and since the 31st I’ve received a total of six messages from either Bill or Chelsea or some other surrogate (and, yes, that includes any official branch of the DNC as long as DWS is Chair) asking for my support. I respect you deeply and my support is all yours, if needed, come November. For now, though, there is another.
When he talks, I hear the harmony of our better angels as he mirrors a vision of a country worthy of the bounty with which we are blessed. A country with plenty for all. A nation free from medical want. A nation in which phenomenal wealth is achievable from every strata of its society; with the simple price tag of supporting the structures which make that success possible in equal measure to your benefit from them. He does not make veiled references that we should be satisfied with the pittance we have. That demanding what we really want will only lead to ugly confrontation. In case you hadn’t noticed, any conversation that does not go 100% the way our most fervent Rightists want becomes a confrontation.
If the decades-long constancy of his positions with which I agree and willingness to speak to a true vision were just it, I might have given in and jumped on your bandwagon long ago. But I do have to say that there has always been something very “Mean Girls” about this cycle. It just felt like a whole lot of ‘Why is he even running? Everyone knows she’s going to win!’ from high school Student Council as your surrogates took their turn on the talking-head shows. The presumption that females will choose you thanks to nothing more than a shared chromosomal profile is as offensive as assuming that the only reason Black folks voted for Obama is because… You get it. That sense of inevitability for you, from others, just isn’t seemly. It’s like deja-vu watching your belated efforts to combat it and makes me question whether you learn from the past.
These are not the real deal-breakers for me, though. That ship sailed 7 years ago, even if we only know of it now. That you broke IT protocol that your immediate superior acceded to for your own ‘convenience’ is a firing offense. Let me be clear, the hubris which led you to utilize a private email server on which to conduct the business of the Department of State of the United States would disqualify you from the office to which you aspire, were the Republican Party not a clear-and-present danger to all life on this planet. It makes me question your judgement. It accentuates an air of entitlement little removed from oligarchy. And that’s all before we get to the potential impacts on the ground which necessitate the policies you flouted. All kinds of those potential impacts will hang around neck like an albatross through the fall, should you win the nomination.
Taking Occam’s Razor to this insurrection you and the Dem Establishment are seeing, it’s pretty simple. Name recognition drove the early polls. Bernie kept singing from the same page of the hymnal he has since I first heard Burlington, VT had a Socialist Mayor. It’s a melody that resonates and there is a rising realization that if the majority of us show up, we can make it real. I hope that you will join the chorus.
All the best,
Darkrogue
