There is a diary up that claims that a call to re-establish the New Deal coalition of FDR is a dog whistle in the same category as Hillary’s “hardworking white workers”.
The author should go back to school. A major part of FDR’s coalition was BLACK people in areas where they were not prohibited to vote, i.e. Northern and Western Cities.
Now this doesn’t negate the fact that many of the New Deal policies did not fully help black people in parts of the country, especially Southern states, and some Southwestern state. The reason for this was the fair amount of local control that was allowed for implementation of many of the laws, as well as some of those groups excluded for coverage like agricultural and domestic workers. But this was a result of “pragmatism”. You know, that great virtue of Hillary. And I don’t know any modern democrat that wouldn’t love to go back in time and change that.
But the fact is that the New Deal helped, and was supported by, a large number of black people.
What amazes me is this fear of working whites and working blacks getting together to fight for economic and racial justice and equality. It is almost pathological. It is very reminiscent of how Sothern Elites reacted to the wave of populism that swept the South in the 1880. Black and white farmers and laborers tried to join together in common cause but were thwarted by the elites that used race as a wedge, and instituted Jim Crow as a way of preventing this union.
It is very sad to see Democrats trying this tactic in 2016. Any that do should be ashamed of themselves.
