In recent weeks as Bernie has wowed his fervent supporters, some have expressed annoyance at African American voters who to date don’t seem to feel the Bern at the rate they should if they knew what was best for them. Michelle Alexander told them that they should not support Hillary Clinton. Cornel West told them, and so did Killer Mike, but despite all the Sanders excitement about surging support, doubts remained that African American voters understood what was best for them, so Bernie finally felt he had to do some Berniesplaining himself during his appearance on BET:
"You know Hillary Clinton now is trying to embrace the President as closely — as she possibly can. Everything the President does is wonderful. She loves the President, he loves her and all that stuff,"
African American voters, he warned, should not let themselves be misled:
"And we know what that's about," he continued. "That's trying to win support from the African American community where the President is enormously popular."
Let’s assume that Hillary Clinton is embracing President Clinton in part for political reasons. Why does Bernie Sanders think that African American voters would not realize this? If Hillary Clinton said anything, as patronizing, the venom and anger in the comments would create so much heat that the servers would melt down.
Up until know, Sanders has seemed to hold himself somewhat apart from the personality cult that has developed around him among supporters who feel it is responsible to vilify a rival who shares most of his positions. (And don’t please respond, with one of those ridiculous difference-maker boxes that chooses only points of disagreement to try to depict Sanders and Clinton as 180 degrees removed.)
Now, it seems the adulation may be finally going to his head: any one who does not feel the Bern apparently needs Berniesplaining.
