Some time ago, I wrote the following on this site:
At some point the concept of "Republicans will do X" has turned into a license for Hillary to do all the same things. It's bizarre, but I don't really consider her a Dem any more.
It’s been a while since I was a regular here, or lived in the United States, so I feel a bit detached from the mental environment of the election. Nonetheless, I feel like Hillary’s current campaign hits on some familiar themes. Here’s Hillary surrogate John Lewis:
“I think it’s the wrong message to send to any group. There’s not anything free in America. We all have to pay for something. Education is not free. Health care is not free. Food is not free. Water is not free. I think it’s very misleading to say to the American people, we’re going to give you something free.”
Lewis said Americans, and especially young people, must learn the value of hard work.
Maybe I am too used to working in a university system where we don’t charge out students tuition, but this seems like a direct rejection of liberalism, as opposed to an argument against Bernie himself. (And certainly not one for Hillary.)
I guess situations may change, but Hillary retains certain ticks as a candidate, including being quick to take the right-wing line in the primary.
