I used to volunteer teaching ESL in Chicago, and lately Orange County CA. Too often, I’d have to turn ladies away because not only didn’t they know English, they didn’t know how to read Spanish. They had been working since they were 8, somehow came here (GOD, is that brave), and never stopped working. I was barely equipped to help learn English with the help of texts, and not able to teach literacy. I am sure there are better teachers than I, who could have created a compelling verbal approach.
I want the US to become a better place.
I want Hispanic middle aged women who possibly never finished grade school, who work in the laundry and are trying to participate in a Democratic primary, to be able to be sure they understand what is going on. So, that’s feeding a lot of how I think about the Huerta incident.
That consideration should be weighed as non-negotiable.

So you know my bias, I want everyone to agree that it would be better to have anyone translate, over having no one translate. It may be good for you, whatever side you are, to try saying that once.
