Dear Mitch,
In case it wasn’t obvious before, when you said that your number one goal was to make sure Barack Obama was a one-term president, you made it apparent today that all you care about is attempting to destroy the legacy of a man you hate. When you said that you wouldn’t even consider a person appointed by the sitting President of the United States, you are showing America the true values of the Republican majority, and the Republican party itself. This is a party that only cares about the text of the constitution when it advances their own agenda. This a party that delegitimizes the views of Democrats because, why not? They aren’t even real Americans.
The notion that the American people will decide who appoints the next justice in 2016 is possibly the most insulting thing a public official has ever said to the country. The people already decided this in 2012. Remember when this happened? That whole one-term goal thing. How did it go? Presidents are presidents for four years, not until Mitch McConnell says so.
Mitch, you are going to lose this one. Your naked disregard for the constitution is on full display, and you are really running the risk of alienating the voting non-Republican types out there. What is going to happen if Obama nominates Sri Srinivasan? A man the senate confirmed unanimously. How are you going to explain to America that he is now suddenly unqualified? What if he nominates an equally qualified African American, or Latino, or woman? How is that going to look for your party when you stand in their way just because of politics? What about when Donald Trump wins your party’s nomination like he probably will. I can only imagine the type of person he might think worthy of sitting on the court.
If you stand in a way of an Obama nomination, you’re only going to have to then try and stand in the way of a Clinton or Sanders nomination. What will you say then? That we have to wait until 2020 for the American people to decide again?
Elections have consequences Mitch. You guys lost, not just once, but twice. Deal with it, and give Obama’s nominee a hearing.
Sincerely,
An American Fed-up with Obstructionist Bull#$%
