House Speaker Paul Ryan has some tough words about Donald Trump and his equivocation over whether or not he's open to receiving white supremacist support.
“This party does not prey on people’s prejudices,” Ryan told reporters at the weekly House GOP leadership news conference.
Without addressing Trump by name, Ryan noted that the Republican presidential campaign had veered into topics such as views on “white supremacists” that should prompt “no evasion” of the topic other than repudiation of those values. […]
“This is fundamental,” Ryan said.
Which is interesting, since his Majority Whip—the number three guy in Republican leadership in the House—has a bit of a white hood issue of his own. In fact, Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) once described himself to a Louisiana reporter as "David Duke without the baggage." So there's that.
There's also this: "The speaker […] reiterated his previous pledges to support whomever wins the nomination in the fall general election." Hey, if it works for House leadership, why not the White House?
